Lightroom 1.4 and Camera Raw 4.4

Lightroom 1.4 and Camera Raw 4.4: "
The Lightroom 1.4 and Camera Raw 4.4 updates have been posted to the following locations: Lightroom(Mac, Win), Camera Raw(Mac, Win).  The updates include support for the following new camera models:

  • Canon EOS 450D (Digital Rebel XSi/EOS Kiss X2)
  • Fujifilm S100FS
  • Nikon D60
  • Olympus SP-570 UZ
  • Pentax K20D
  • Pentax K200D
  • Sony A200
  • Sony A300
  • Sony A350

Lightroom 1.4 and Camera Raw 4.4 include corrections for the following issues:

    • Previous camera profiles identified in the Calibrate panel of the Develop module may have displayed poor results at extreme ends of the temperature and tint ranges. A new camera profile identified as Camera Raw 4.4 is now available and will be applied by default to all images without existing Camera Raw or Lightroom settings. The creation of new default profiles will also include the updated Camera Raw 4.4 profile. Images edited in Camera Raw or Lightroom with earlier profiles will retain the earlier profile value and visual appearance.

    • In previous grayscale conversions the Color Noise setting was disabled and this could result in an image with excessive noise when grayscale channel mixing is applied.  Both the tool and effect have been enabled in Lightroom 1.4 and Camera Raw 4.4 providing the ability to reduce noise in grayscale conversions.  In order to return to the prior visual appearance, Color Noise reduction can be set to zero.

Lightroom 1.4 includes corrections for the following issue:

    • Compatibility with legacy printer drivers on OS X 10.5 (Leopard) has been updated. I'd like to thank everyone who commented on my earlier post regarding this topic. Some valuable feedback was provided and by working directly with Apple and Epson we are able to provide a resolution through this Lightroom update.

As always, don't forget rule #5!

    Focus In Imaging 2008

Well, it's been a busy few days. After working til 3am on Sunday night, I was picked up just after 5am for the first flight of the day. That was a Galway-Dublin flght. With a small amount of time to spare, we made comfortably time on our next flight. Into Birmingham for Focus On Imaging 2008. I was there for a number of reasons: meeting people, buying things and making new contacts.

I spent the day walking around getting a feel for the show. My intentions were to make a list of places to visit and things to get done. There was no Adobe stand per se, but Rapid (a reseller) had an Adobe Theatre. Mike Wong from On One software was giving a talk on Lightroom. I introduced myself before the show and MIke kept pointing at me and referring to me during the show.. Funny MIke ;) Good to meet you in person!

I spoke at length to Phil Jones from the SWPP about competition judging. They've recently changed the way images are scored to an Award system, rather than a points system. It was refreshing to hear the thought that went into it.

Today, I got to meet Andy Rouse finally and have a chat with him. I'm an avid Canon user, with a fair amount of money invested in glass, but it was still great to hear him sing the praise of the Nikon D3 for noise and autofocus. As I shoot a ot of gigs, it was a very convincing argument, but despite the show price of £2999, I still didn't bite.

I also met Mike McNamee from Professional Imagemaker magazine. I''ve done an article as an introduction to Lightroom for them in the past. I promised a further one on Develop, so I'll be doing that shortly.

I didn't intend buying anything, but the bargains were to be had, so I'm currently sitting beside my Compudaypack, with a 10'X20' Muslin stuck in the Laptop compartment. It fits.... kinda! I got it from Viewfinder Photography, along with some hotshoe umbrella clips.

FOI2008-2336.jpgOne bit of fun was getting to jump in on the Bowens stand with Jon Grey shooting model Jade Cartwright, After each session there was a free for all where people watching the talk could shoot. I happened to be passing by a few times and got a go. I spoke to Jade a lunchtime. She's a good bunch of fun and a cracking model. There's nothing like working with an experienced model.

So good fun, nice purchases and great networking! Well worth the trip. 2 fellow photographers, Mike and Trevor, were along for the first time. Trevor got a 5D and Mike got an 85 f1.2, so I think it was worth their while! I'll be back again next year and maybe it'll be with a Press pass for Lightroom-News.com!..

    Lightroom update in mid November.

Lightroom Product Manager Tom Hogarty has announced over at Lightroom Journal. The update will solve the issues for new users of Mac OS X.5 Leopard. Tom lists a number of issues users are seeing and is requesting that users post others issues in the comments of the post. Hopefully this will appease the users having Lightroom/Leopard issues. Jumping to a new OS is something that should be left for a few days or weeks in my opinion. It's not called the 'bleeding edge' of technology for nothing!

    Jennifer Apple on Lightroom-News.com

Jennifer Apple of Photoshopsupport.com has posted her first article on Lightroom-News.com. In it she covers a preview of 7 books on Lightroom available for preorder. I had posted the links to Amazon.com Lightroom books in the U2U forum, but never got around to writing about it. I thought it would make a good article. I was right!

    Lightroom-News

I'd like to announce Lightroom-News. I feel the need to because A long time ago, in a clandestine, dimly lit street, a stranger approached from out of the fog. His large frame was hidden in his dark cloak, while his hat covered any trace of his face. Just as he passed, he turned and glanced at me. A chill filled me. My body froze, while my once strong legs melted like butter on a pan. With nowhere to go, I was forced to turn and face my fear. In a booming voice he said' So Martin and I were wondering, would you like to get involved with Lightroom News?'. "Yes" I said after a little thought.

And now it's live and well worth looking at. LRN is a sister site to Photoshop News and will provide a central location for Lightroom related things from news to tutorials, including reviews and issues.
